It also has to be done in secret, he has to be able to draw or carve the rune on something belonging to the person in question or directly on the object in question and he needs time to finish the rune chant (app. 20 minutes or so). He also stole Sif’s golden hair, tricked Idunn into getting captured by a giant, and fathered (or mothered) countless creatures that were antagonistic to the gods. However, he also helped the gods procure all of their strongest weapons and he used his cunning both to get the wall around Asgard erected and to retrieve Thor’s hammer when it had been stolen by a giant. According to Loki, he just played his part in making sure that events unfolded the way they had been laid out from the beginning. Others may very well view it differently. When Balder had been killed and Tökk, who may or may not have been Loki in disguise, had refused to cry for him and thus let him be released from Hel, Loki was captured by the other gods (in the very fishing net he had just invented and made himself) and placed beneath a stone in a cave. To make sure that he would not try to escape they made one of his sons into a wolf and let him tear his other son apart. Then they took the hot entrails and tied Loki up with them, confident that he would not try to tear the last remains of one of his children apart. They were right. They also placed a huge serpent over his head so its venom could drip down in his face and eyes. His wife Sigyn held a bowl under it but once in a while she had to empty it and then the pain was so great that he made the earth tremble and shake.
